Arguably one of fashion’s biggest events, last night’s Met Gala was once again the talk of the town (well really, the world) today as everyone weighed in on the invites, the theme and of course, the fashion.
This year the theme, Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology, gave designers a chance to go out and do their interpretation of what and how technology has affected the fashion today. This ranged from takes on the colour and material of the clothes, to infusing it directly into the gowns (hello Claire Danes and Zac Posen).
Of course, technology means so much more than just adding a little metal or spark to an outfit. Ultimately the theme is about looking to the future (and remembering the past) and wondering how fashion will continue to evolve in the digital age. If this is what’s coming, then we’d have to say the future is looking pretty good.
1. Ciara
Our favourite “1, 2 Step” girl is a vision in this silver ensemble, custom-made by H&M. The slinky number features pendants of Swarovski crystals, perfectly offset with her silver wig for a futuristic, metallic feel.
2. Lupita Nyong’o
Red carpet darling Lupita Nyong’o knows how to stun and her gorgeous metallic green dress with sheer skirt from Calvin Klein is a definite winner. The sky-high hair is just another way of adding a does of literal high fashion.
3. Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik
This Instagram-winning couple definitely know how to make their red carpet debut. The ex-One Directioner dressed his Versace suit with a literal addition of mechanical tech (which seems like a cool nod to Michael Jackson no less) while the IT model wore Tommy Hillfiger (and a USD$2000 metallic manicure).
4. Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson’s bridal-inspired gown by Atelier Versace with risqué cutouts shows that the mechanical can be romantic and beautiful too. No silver or brass necessary to make this dress fashion forward (and on theme).
5. Jonathan Ive
The designer of our favourite Apple products clearly knows a thing or two about combining tech and design. Ive’s proves that Silicon Valley blends in perfectly with fashion’s elite dressed in a dapper tux. He might be going for the classic look but his tech (and fashion) forward Apple Watchnot pictured is a game changer.
6. Cindy Crawford
Proving age is nothing but a number, supermodel Cindy Crawford dazzles in a sparkly, slinky, custom number from Balmain.
7. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
A couple made for the digital age, Kardashian and West know how to complement without being overly matchy-matchy. Both decked out in Balmain, were all about the silver, right down to West’s silver contact lenses (how’s that for technology).
8. Naomi Watts
Keeping things cool, Naomi Watts showcases another classic look from a brand that knows all about being tech forward. She elevates this Burberry look with a pair of jewel encrusted drop earrings by Fred Leighton.
9. Will.i.am
Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am wears an all black tuxedo with eye-catching silver flower details by Gucci. Taking the machina side of the theme quite literally, he finishes the look with a face visor, for some cyborg vibes.
10. Kendall Jenner
Created by Ateliar Versace, Kendal Jenner’s bright blue and white dress is inspired by the idea of entangled wires — for those of us from the pre-mobile phone era, we’ve all been there, though probably never looking this gorgeous. Even the museum itself tweeted its approval of this on trend look.
